Next Info Session: Wednesday, June 26, 7 pm
It was a great to have so many of you and your family come out to the BBQ on June 8th! What a beautiful thing it is to have a community of people that are so committed to doing the very best for their youth and kids!
The 4 members of the Startup Crew who were present had many wonderful conversations and it was inspiring getting to know you better. It was exciting to feel a community vibe emerging, and to see youth having fun together. Thank you for your participation and especially to the youth who came, played and hopefully got to know a few new faces!
We have also picked a date for our next information meeting. Please come out Wednesday, June 26, 7:00 pm, to the Thiessens (3144 Henderson Hwy), same location as the BBQ. We will present all we know to this point in regards to costs, times and logistics, and are looking forward to getting your input and feedback. Michael Bender, our SelfDesign mentor, will also be skyped in for the meeting, and will be available to answer questions.
Shortly following this meeting we are planning to host another youth event , where youth can continue to get to know each other (and have some fun together!) in preparation for the beginning of their Three65 Community in September.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you again on June 26th!

A few additions our last update...
Many of you have been responding to our last update, RSVPing to the BBQ on June 8, and giving us feedback with a few questions of your own. We thought we’d address some of the common questions we are getting.
Will there be teens?
One question that has come up is in regards to the ages of the youth that three65 is geared towards. There seems to be some confusion that we will be working mainly with tweens, due to our “11 and up” wording. But we are definitely geared to teens, and there are already a number of older youth who are committed for September!
Why mentors?
Some of you are also asking: why we are going to be working with mentors?
There are so many reasons! A really fabulous mentor -- and those of us who have worked with Michael in our families can’t imagine a better person to do this -- can help a group of youth become a real, functioning, beautiful, and intentional community. We feel this is crucial: not just to throw a group of kids 11 and up or a group of teens together and expect them to know how to achieve consensus, how to create a culture that welcomes and brings out the best in everyone, and how to put legs on their dreams and desires. A mentor like Michael will help them figure out how to do these things. And because he is a SelfDesign mentor, he will always come from a place of belief in your son or daughter, a belief in their ability to author their own lives and access what really makes them enthusiastic and present in their learning.
We also feel that as youth get older, they really need and desire mentorship from adults in the larger community -- adults who share their passions and can help them envision where their curiosity can take them. Access to adults who care and share learning adventures with you, when you are young and exploring your interests, can make all the difference in your life.
To really catch our vision about mentorship, please take the time to watch this video from the SelfDesign High website -- it expresses the essence and importance of mentorship better than we could ever explain it: http://vimeo.com/63776152
Cost
We are in the stages of finalizing our costs for our SelfDesign mentor. Be assured that SelfDesign is trying to give us the deepest discount they can -- they have already volunteered countless hours in helping us get to this point. We are aware that we need to keep our costs as low as possible, while still being sustainable. There are a number of things we are looking at to help us mitigate expenses: free spaces, a sponsorship program, fundraising, a bartering system, and many local mentors who can offer their services for free or at a very minimum cost.
SelfDesign High in Nelson has had tremendous success with fundraising, and has found that their fundraising efforts have gone a long way to building their sense of community. Please hang in there with us for a little longer till we iron out our basic costs, so we can make sure we are building a sustainable program. Then we can all join forces as a community to support our kids with fundraising and sponsorship, so they can do amazing things together!
Please Come!
We also wanted to mention that you are not committing yourself to three65 by coming to our BBQ on June 8. If you have teens and kids 11 and up; if you are curious; if you want to meet some of the youth and families that are excited about this venture; or are just hungry for community, please come and see if we are a right fit for you! We will be there to answer questions, and other families will be there to network with. There are more than 20 families who have already RSVP’d and will be there!
Location
The BBQ, weather permitting, will be held at Derryl and Sandy’s, at 3411 Henderson Hwy, just past the North Perimeter, on the left side of the road - a long driveway immediately before a green house (if you reach Hoddinott Road you've gone too far). There will be balloons at the road to show you which driveway to turn down. Please park along the red fence on the grass to the left of the driveway. There will be some carpooling available if you need a ride -- call Dulcy at (204) 269-8857 if you’d like to be part of the carpooling.
Please remember to bring: your own main dish--meat/alternatives for yourselves (barbecue and fire pit will be available, the latter provided there is no fire ban); your own water/drinks; your own dishes, cups and cutlery; finger food (sweet or savory) to share; your own chairs/blankets; mosquito repellent.
Really looking forward to seeing you there!
The Start-up Team
Update, and Potluck/BBQ Event
Over the last few weeks, the start up team has been busy having conversations with SelfDesign and adding a few more logistical details to our three65 framework. We are so thrilled to have had so many people come out to our info sessions, and so many youth get excited about creating their learning community! We thought it was time to give you an update on a few things.
A Wide Open, Protected Space
From the start, it has been our goal to create a wide open, protected space for our youth -- a space in which they can work out their collective interests and passions and embark on exciting projects of their choosing.... with mentors behind them, and a community of parents to support their endeavors!
Here is how we see the framework working for Phase 1: three65 will begin with a cohort of tweens (11 and up), and a cohort of teens. ** This group may choose to create smaller groups as the youth themselves see fit -- as they work out the interests that they will be pursuing together, on their own, and with mentors.
Mentors
Many of you have expressed that your youth need community. But why mentors? Mentors can provide the piece that can be missing in many homeschool families: that place where parent interests don’t intersect with those of their youth. A mentor can also help kids be intentional about how they create the culture of their community, and learn about consensus. And a great mentor really believes in you, helps you see how amazing you are, and that your interests and passions are worthwhile endeavors.
Michael Bender (SelfDesign Global, learning consultant) is now in place to work with our youth. In our opinion, and for the youth that have met him, there could not be a better person in the world to get behind our youth and help them make their dreams a reality! Michael and a group of youth met on May 5 (at the second information session), and the synergy was beautiful!
An additional local, on-the-ground mentor, which three65 will be hiring soon (more details to follow), will also be on board. Both will be available to guide and mentor the youth as they form their learning community.
Michael and the local OTG mentor will be meeting with the youth regularly, starting in September. Learning endeavors, projects, explorations, etc. will happen at varied times and locations as the youth plan them, as time and space allow and as the many and diverse local mentors they will be accessing are available. We are tentatively considering reserving Thursday mornings (10 - 1) as a time for getting together with Michael and our on-the-ground mentor -- a regular weekly time to plan, dream, discuss and dive into interests and projects. We are also considering asking you to reserve Monday afternoons and/or evenings and Saturday mornings for project-related work -- to work with local mentors that may not be available during the work week.

Next Info Night - Sunday, May 5
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made it out to our Info Night on April 12th! We estimate there were over 50 people there, including a large number of youth and kids -- a big thank you to them especially for lending their voice!
We had a chance to meet some SelfDesign mentors, be introduced to the three65 concept, field some (most excellent!) questions, and mindmap as a group to think about what we want and are looking for. The start-up team is in the midst of planning the next meeting and discussing ways of improving on the last one. We hope to give more clarity, and especially to give the youth a bigger chance to share their ideas and wishes.
We thought we should let those of you who came to the meeting know that there will be many more gatherings in the coming months to discuss, more specifically, some of the questions and considerations that came up at the meeting, and that youth and kids will have many chances to get together in smaller (and less intimidating!) groups to talk about what they are jazzed about and what they envision.
We are holding our next Info Night on May 5, from 2 - 4, in the same space, Central Church of Christ, Youth Room, 170 St Mary’s Road. We hope to see you there!
P.S. Feel free to keep sending us any questions and ideas you may have, using the contact form under the Join Us! tab. We will do our best to get back to you within a week or so.
